Phil Spencer Tells Xbox Fan To Expect Major xCloud Feature 'This Year'

You may recall that back in mid-2022, a new Xbox Cloud Gaming feature was announced that would let you play "owned" games from your My Games & Apps library using the service - even if they weren't part of Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft has gone quiet on this ever since, but Xbox boss Phil Spencer actually confirmed to an Xbox fan over the weekend (via direct message of all things!) that the plan is for this feature to be rolled out in 2024:

Xbox Cloud Gaming Now Accounts For At Least 10% Of Overall Xbox Playtime

Phil Spencer recently talked to outlet Game File about a wide range of different topics to do with Microsoft's gaming business, and the Xbox boss slipped in some chatter about Xbox Cloud Gaming and how much it's grown in recent times.

Cloud gaming on Microsoft's platform "now accounts for a double-digit percentage of total hours of Xbox games played" as the method of play becomes much more popular. Phil even said that at one point Xbox had more cloud slots than needed, but now that's completely changed as demand has grown.

There was a time when we weren't deploying more [server] blades because we had more supply than we did demand for the server racks that we had in place [...] That's clearly not true today.

Indeed, we've started to see considerable wait times for Xbox Cloud Gaming every now and then - the modern way of play is certainly becoming more popular. We can see why - if internet speeds are good you can jump into huge AAA games on Xbox without any sort of download time!

Down below are some other highlights from Game File's chat with Phil, and the full interview is well worth a read if you're curious about more of what the Xbox boss had to say during a busy week for the team.

So decided I wanted to play some Forza Horizon 4 this weekend, but couldn't be arsed to download the entire game, so decided to stream.

I can say that it's probably been 18 months since I last streamed Forza Horizon and at that point I could feel the lag in the controls. As the game is faced paced, input lag is quickly noticeable.

This time around I hardly noticed any lag. It was even pushing 60FPS on 1080p and I find it to be smooth overall. If they could get the resolution up to 1440p minimum and add some HDR, I may even start using it even more.

They implemented negative latency from Google :ROFLMAO:

But seriously it's all fun and games until you decide to play properly.

Xbox Cloud Gaming will let you stream your own games in November / Microsoft is expanding its game streaming service to thousands more Xbox games.

Microsoft is planning to support the streaming of Xbox game libraries next month. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company is getting ready to test the ability to stream games that you own that aren’t part of the existing Xbox Game Pass library.

As part of a long-running project known as Project Lapland inside of Microsoft, the software giant has been readying its Xbox Cloud Gaming servers to be able to support streaming thousands of games. I’m told Microsoft will first test its new Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming capabilities with Xbox Insiders in November, before expanding them to more Xbox users and more games.

We've been waiting ages for Xbox Cloud Gaming to expand to games that aren't part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library, and it sounds like the time has almost arrived - Xbox employees are literally testing the feature right now.

This is according to The Verge's Tom Warren, who has revealed 10 games that are being tested internally:

  • DREDGE
  • Dying Light 2
  • Hades
  • High On Life
  • Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Metro Exodus
  • PGA Tour 2K23 (Xbox One edition)
  • The Crew Motorfest (Xbox One edition)
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition

The plan, apparently, is for members of the Xbox Insider program to gain access to this feature at some point in November (so yes, this month!), before it eventually rolls out to the public in the future. Apparently, the goal is to support thousands of titles through Xbox Cloud Gaming, but we don't know how many will be available at the beginning.

Another question is whether you'll still need to be subscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in order to access these titles via the cloud, and we're assuming the answer to that is yes. Hopefully we'll get some clarification very soon.

Xbox and LG to Bring Cloud Gaming to LG Smart TVs

Today, we’re excited to announce our collaboration with LG Electronics to bring the Xbox app to their new LG Smart TVs later this year. This means Game Pass Ultimate members will be able to play their games directly from the Xbox app on supported LG Smart TVs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. This gives players even more choice in how they enjoy their favorite games.

Soon, players with LG Smart TVs will be able to explore the Gaming Portal for direct access to hundreds of games in the Game Pass Ultimate catalog, including popular titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and upcoming releases like Avowed (launching February 18, 2025).

Xbox Cloud Gaming's Strong Momentum Continues With 'Record' Hours Streamed

Another positive to come out of Xbox's latest earnings report was regarding the "strong momentum" of its cloud gaming services.

Alongside his comments about Game Pass's new quarterly revenue record, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed how Xbox Cloud Gaming has actually set its own new record - with 140 million hours streamed in the latest quarter.

Satya Nadella: "We also continue to see strong momentum for Xbox Cloud Gaming, with a record 140 million hours streamed this quarter."

As already mentioned, the growth across Xbox's content and services for the current quarter set new records, with the PC subscriber count of Xbox Game Pass users also drastically increasing with the arrival of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Indiana Jones.

Xbox has been busy expanding on the cloud experience recently with insiders being given the ability to stream their own game on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles.

And, as reported earlier this month, Xbox is also working on some big improvements to the service, which could include things like "4K streaming, higher bitrates, PC game support" and "more buy-to-own Xbox cloud games".

This feature in a first world country is the future. Especially for that single player experience. Basically only the 'pro' gamers will have consoles in a decade.
