Award-Winning $3.99 Game 'The Exit 8' Has Just Shadow Dropped On Xbox

The Exit 8 is purposely designed to be low-budget and short (it could take you less than hour to beat), but nevertheless it's still managed to prove popular with its fans - to the point where it's even being adapted into a movie this year! And, as referenced in the headline, the game was a "Breakthrough Award" winner at the Japan Game Awards 2024.

You can grab The Exit 8 right now on the Xbox Store at a price of £3.39 / $3.99 for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Microsoft Has Reportedly Discussed Acquiring IP From Ubisoft

In recent months, we've seen that Ubisoft is still seeking investment from somewhere as it wrangles with game delays and general management difficulties - and a new bit of information has come to light today that suggests Microsoft has held discussions with the company over the future of its gaming IP.

In an article shared by IGN, one disgruntled Ubisoft shareholder has started spilling some information about what's going on over there right now. Juraj Krúpa, CEO of AJ Investments (the shareholder in question), claims that the Assassin's Creed maker failed to disclose "discussions between Microsoft, EA, and others that are interested in acquiring IPs from Ubisoft".

Krúpa apparently mentioned that these discussions were shared in "a restricted article published by business investment platform MergerMarket", and that neither Ubisoft investors nor the public were informed of them by the French game maker.

In its defense, Ubisoft has shared a statement with IGN as part of today's article - a statement that's filled with plenty of business jargon; the sort of language that makes your brain melt when reading it. Anyway, from what we can parse, Ubisoft is basically saying that it's exploring different options for the future of its IP - and we'll only find out more if and when any of those options turns into an actual deal.

"As we mentioned during our Q3 sales, the review of various transformational strategic and capitalistic options is ongoing. The Board has established an ad-hoc independent Committee to oversee this formal and competitive process, so as to extract the best value from Ubisoft’s assets and franchises for all stakeholders. Ubisoft will inform the market in accordance with applicable regulations if and once a transaction materialises."

Unfortunately, there's no hints as to which IP Microsoft (or EA for that matter) is interested in acquiring from the company, but it's safe to say that Ubisoft's asking price would probably factor heavily. The team has lots of lucrative game series under its belt - game series that the likes of Xbox and EA would be glad to scoop up at the right price.

Ubisoft is such a mess this is probably a good thing. Although looking at their IP I’m not sure there’s much there they haven’t already run into the ground.

MS should get a good price at least.

A recent Xbox UI mockup shared by Microsoft appears to have given us our first look at a Steam tab coming to the platform across multiple devices.

As Microsoft moves along with its plans to combine Xbox and Windows for a handheld future, the company has given us our first taste of what the UI could look like. In a recent blog post, Microsoft shared an image showing a Steam tab in an Xbox UI mockup, although the company swiftly removed the image shortly after.

We've had our first look at a Steam tab in a new Xbox UI
  • Microsoft is combining "the best of Xbox and Windows for handheld systems
  • A recent look at a new Xbox UI revealed a tab for your Steam library
  • Microsoft has since removed the image
In a new blog post, Microsoft shared an image showcasing a new Xbox UI featuring a tab for Steam games (via The Verge). The image has since been removed, but not before screenshots recorded the moment. Interestingly, while the new Xbox UI is being developed for handhelds, it can clearly be seen on a TV, laptop, mobile, tablet, and handheld in the mockup, suggesting a universal UI overhaul is on the way.

Talking Point: How Excited Are You For A Potential Oblivion Remake This Month?

These Oblivion remake rumours are getting out of hand! We've seen the likes of Nate The Hate and DetectiveSeeds suggesting it's on the way soon, and now Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb is also saying it'll shadow drop in April.

Perhaps there's a slight chance they're all misinformed, but it seems much more likely that we'll be getting this new version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion over the next few weeks. The question is, how bothered are you about it?

Jeff Grubb: I've been told it's going to shadow drop at any moment this month.

The Xbox 360 version of Oblivion was a classic without a doubt, but almost 20 years later, there's a whole lot they could do to shine it up. We've heard rumours that the remake is going to improve things like the blocking system, the stamina system, the HUD and archery - while also supposedly giving the game an Unreal Engine 5 makeover.

Does that sound exciting to you? Do you want to go back and experience Oblivion all over again in 2025? We're keen to hear what thoughts you have about these rumours so far, and what kind of features you're hoping to see in this remake.

I am done anticipating anything Elder Scrolls.

We would get more Beth games if they trained tortoises to code

Microsoft is raising prices on Xbox consoles, controllers, and games worldwide. New first-party Xbox games are moving from $69.99 to $79.99 later this year, but there are no Xbox Game Pass increases.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series S (512GB) model is moving from $299.99 to $379.99, a price hike of $80. The Xbox Series S 1TB model is moving to $429.99, and the Xbox Series X digital edition will now be priced at $549.99, with the 2TB galaxy black special edition model now an eye-watering $729.99.

Lol Series X 2tb is more than a PS5 Pro in the US?

WTF is going on, crazy.

Gaming across the board is getting a bit hectic now. Will be interesting to see if the public reacts or just keeps on buying anyway.

It is getting expensive now - i have a suspicion that users is going to revert back to piracy. Luckily we still have game pass

I actually was not even aware the FTC was still trying to stop the deal!

****************************

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has given up fighting Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard two years after the deal officially closed.

Despite Microsoft completing the record-breaking $69 billion acquisition in October 2023, the FTC has finally dropped its case against Microsoft's Activision Blizzard deal.
  • After losing an appeal earlier this month, the FTC has now dropped its case against Microsoft
  • The FTC said it has "determined that the public interest is best served by dismissing the administrative litigation of the case"
  • Microsoft president Brad Smith called the decision a "victory for players"
Not long after the US District Court for the Northern District of California gave the all clear and Microsoft finalized its takeover of Activision Blizzard, the FTC moved ahead with an appeal in an attempt to overturn the court's decision.

Xbox Game Pass Annual Revenue Nears $5 Billion For First Time, Says Microsoft CEO

Last week, we highlighted how Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had been discussing the recent job layoffs at Xbox, stating how they'd been "weighing heavily on me" and that he expressed his "sincere gratitude to those who have left".

That's not to say Xbox hasn't enjoyed any success recently though, and in a follow-up conference call after yesterday's FY25 Q4 earnings report, Nadella pointed out some of the latest achievements for Microsoft's gaming division.

You can see a bit of what he said below - as transcribed by the folks over at TweakTown:

"When it comes to gaming, we have 500 million monthly active users across platforms and devices. We are now the top publisher on both Xbox and PlayStation this quarter with successful launches of Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered. The Call of Duty franchise has never been stronger; over 50 million people played Black Ops 6, total hours surpassed 2 billion. Minecraft saw record monthly active usage and revenue this quarter thanks in large part to the success of the Minecraft movie.

We have nearly 40 games in development, so much, much more to come. We surpassed over 500 million hours of gameplay streamed via the cloud this year, and Game Pass annual revenue was nearly $5 billion for the first time."

The bit that's getting most attention is that Game Pass annual revenue was nearly $5 billion for the first time, while we're also intrigued to hear that almost 40 games are currently in development at various Xbox studios right now.

And as for the Xbox and PlayStation "top publisher" mention, that's no longer a surprise at this point. As noted, the likes of Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered have been dominant for Microsoft over the past few months.

I see there's talk there will no xbox console for next gen now. This comes not too long after they confirmed they agreed with AMD to build their next console. MS changing up quite a bit in a short space of time. I excepted them to go to xcloud with the xbox everywhere campaign but not from next gen.

Whenever MS change something related to Game Pass, people seem to lose their mind. I think there are a lot of people that just want Xbox to die, especially the PC Game Pass subscribers that were hit hardest by the Game Pass price increases.

UPDATE (Oct 5, 2025): Microsoft has provided the following statement, echoing our previous report: "We are actively investing in our future first-party consoles and devices designed, engineered and built by Xbox. For more details, the community can revisit our agreement announcement with AMD."

I think it depends on what you consider a console.

From the looks of it they will have Xbox branded hardware, but functionally it will be a Windows based approximation of the console experience.

Hardware would also be priced in the same manner as tablets and laptops, rather than the at cost or thereabouts pricing model of consoles.

The new ROG handheld I imagine to be the test bed for this new approach. I doubt MS themselves know quite how to bridge the ecosystem gap, so this rumour might stem from internal discussions around that.

Glad that they've come out and squashed the stories but where there's smoke, there's usually fire so perhaps it's being discussed but not concrete as yet. I want xbox to thrive and I really enjoyed my time with my Series X and gamepass. Had they kept things the same as when I got my XSX I would still have my console today. Greedy sony needs the competition or we will be faced with another Nintendo scenario on console.

I suppose if its free, the why not.

I believe NVidia has an ad tier on GeForce Now as well.

On that new report; Windows Central is stating that folks will soon be able to stream their owned games without an Xbox Game Pass subscription, and that this new ad-based version of Xbox Cloud Gaming will cover that. The site mentions that it doesn't know exactly when this will arrive, but reporter Jez Corden says "I'm told it's coming this year".
