So allegedly tests were done showing they have XY chromosomes.


Last year, Both Khelif and Yu-ting from Chinese Taipei, were tested by the IBA.

They were disqualified after IBA president Umar Kremlev said DNA tests had “proved they had XY chromosomes and were thus excluded”.

For males, XY is the combination of chromosomes while XX is the combination in females.

However, the IBA didn’t want to go into more detail about how these two athletes were suddenly disqualified — citing privacy reasons.

They did say, however, the athletes did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a “separate and recognised test” where they were found to have “competitive advantages” over other female competitors

Yet the IOC seem to want to ignore that and purely base their eligibility on...

On Tuesday, IOC spokesman Mark Adams said during a news conference he feared the eligibility of both boxers would turn into “a witch hunt”.

“These boxers are completely eligible. They are women on their passports, they are women who have competed in the Tokyo Olympics and have been competing for many years,” he said.

The IBA's claim was made without evidence and the IBA itself is not considered a trustworthy organisation - the disqualification came after having participated. It was the Russian president of the IBA who disqualified her after she defeated a Russian fighter. The organisation was banned by the IOC in 2019.

It's possible for a woman to have high testosterone levels and male facial characteristics without being intersex, similarly you can be intersex without sporting obvious male facial markers:



Meaning there could be a lot more intersex individuals competing that draw no suspicion due to their appearance, despite many female athletes sporting extraordinary musculature and proportions.

All this to say that for an organisation such as the IOC, it's a very complicated and multifaceted situation that needs to be navigated with careful consideration. From a biological perspective, if we insist on two genders, the line is by no means clear cut - we all start in the womb from the same female base.

Also keep in mind often times intersex people aren't even aware of their status as such, and in the case of Imane Khelif, come from countries where some of the more unsavoury allegations can carry severe repercussions.
