Olympic Games 2024
And the opponent...

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif is competing in the women's welterweight event at the Olympic Games in Paris; Khelif was disqualified from the World Championships last year due to testosterone levels

It's a tricky one. She's not a man, if I'm understanding this right, she is intersex? There are roughly the same amount of intersex individuals as red-heads, so likely a number competing and have competed throughout history.

It would be unfair for them to compete against men, so do you then ban them from competing altogether, or should there be a third gender category? Which then opens up the conversation, some people just do have certain genetic advantages over others - where should the lines be drawn?

Ja, I don't know what is to be done.

Semenya is obviously the same but there is a huge difference in running the 800 m with high testosterone levels and getting into a ring and moering each other.

It's an interesting thing to consider when you look closely. People with neanderthal ancestry can benefit from larger lung capacity and denser bones. Height is an advantage in basketball, is it fair to allow players with acromegaly? Then you get other factors like where your muscles attach to the bone, which can boost strength by as much as 25%. Or what of someone like Michael Phelps who's arm span exceeds his height, giving him an advantage when it comes to swimming?

EDIT: I'd also like to highlight the disingenuous way in which this case has been publicised, through the lens of the current culture war. I also find it somewhat amusing that these are the same people that like to say that sporting a penis makes you a man, finished and klaar - why then does that not hold for Imane Khelif in visual possession of a vagina?

Paige Badenhorst finishes in First Place in the Women’s Single Sculls Semi-Finals in a time of 7:55.91 and qualifies to Final C.

The IOC's only criteria for this is that if your passport says female, then you're a woman.

Why can't you run against women (Caster), you can't swim against them (Lia Thomas) but you can bliksem them? It's fundamentally wrong and you can't defend it. Protect the women's sport, at least we got there with swimming by banning men pretending to be women

Agreed. But then you have to be absolutely sure that is what’s happening and not just look at a person and decide.

In this case, she was born a woman. She’s completed and lost to other women in the past. The testosterone levels paint a different picture and so did a DNA test.

Not so clear cut as a man identifying as a women and taking part.

Or they can merely publish their tests results. Allegedly the failed gender test included DNA tests.

It also true that she was at the 2020 Olympics, won nothing and nobody said anything.
Because we only found out about it in 2022?

Still doesn't change the fact that it's unfair. Should have 3 categories as suggested before. Men,Women and another category with athletes born with unusual characteristics
