PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro)
You state "the price of the pro is definitely the starting point for next gen console pricing" - that is not a fact, that is your fear. It wouldn't make sense for Sony to do that, not unless Xbox and Nintendo offerings are in a similar ballpark, which is unlikely.

As for not offering a PS6 Pro, if the PS5 Pro does alright, why not? It's a nice to have for those that are willing to pay for it.

Read my post again. We're saying the same thing in a different way lol.

It has nothing to do with being able to afford it or not, nor does someone's financial position in a territory Sony likely doesn't care much for.

This is purely about value and what you get for it and the PS5 Pro has low value compared to it's cost. People making up reasons to purchase one tells you all you need you know about this revisions value.

In that case you cannot disagree that cost / benefit doesn't make financial sense to most. If the PS4 Pro was niche this is beyond that and I really hope that it does not do the numbers to justify it next gen.

Yeah for sure the sting isn’t nearly as high here, not just because of earning foreign currency but also because the price really is lower. And the trade in deal on my PS5 is $500, not sure you guys get trade in deals for pre-orders?

$1200 here so should be max R14,000 in SA. But that’s the way it is for Saffas and I think always has been? Then with the trade in I’m only really in for R8,000 for the upgrade.

But there’s always dummys who don’t understand value and price differ between regions and individuals and so think people who find value where they don’t are just silly. Newsflash: most of the world thinks gaming of any kind is a waste of time and money. Who cares what others think though, spend your money on whatever you want.

Yeah in your case you're virtually getting your money back on the base PS5 and getting the Pro which makes it a much better proposition for you. We don't have much of an platform for trade ins here and the stores that do basically give you toilet paper as compensation so you're left to sell it of places like carbonite or FB marketplace which is more effort than reward. Locally the PS5 digital is going for R10.5k and the pro is R20k so imo you're better off with 2 PS5's over the pro.

Are we? I read it again and I don't see how.

For an individual, why would you be better off with two of the same thing than one superior version of that thing?

Can't help you there mate.

Perspective. I consider the pro a marginal upgrade so not worth paying double in randelas. I also have kids so I cannot dedicate a specific area for gaming; which means that two is better than one in my case. Currently that's the series X but I am considering selling it (MS is shafting console gamers with gamepass subs increases) and buying a PS5 on black Friday or from somebody looking to upgrade to a pro.

With modern techniques resolutions don't mean what they used to.

Why do people keep saying this like upscaling is magic. It can be a great benefit but the tech can only do so much.

In my experience on 3 different setups with the best upscaling technique around:
On a 1080p display, even 720p -> 1080p in DLSS Quality mode was poor. Just not enough pixels for DLSS to work with.
On a 1440p display, 835p-> 1440p was the lowest I could accept but there were motion artifacts. 960p was much better.
On a 4K display, 1080p -> 4K was the lowest I was comfortable with and it's really good. 1440p-> 4K was near native to my eyes.

504p is quite simply unacceptable in a modern title on any modern display with even the best upscaling technique on the planet. 720p is still noticeably bad, especially when using FSR.

1080p->4K is what we should be getting. On PSSR and DLSS it would be the sweet spot by far.
And when a 5600X+RX5700XT does 1080p/64 FPS on Ultra settings in DA The Veilguard, it really puts into question the 720p/60 experience on a PS5.

I think the reason why the Pro annoys me so much is the fact that a minimum 1080p/60 experience on a 4K display is what we should've gotten this gen and even 800 euros doesn't get you that in some "Pro" titles.

Like Alan Wake 2. Those Remedy devs claiming the resolution doesn't improve the experience noticeably thought they could fool console owners.
But on this issue I am confident that I could tell the difference when playing at 864p and 1080p on Alan Wake 2 with PSSR or DLSS and it is noticeable worse on the lower resolution.

Some journo this week said PSSR is more important that the hardware in the Pro and I agree. It's trying to salvage a somewhat stable image in motion from sometimes abysmal internal resolutions.

PS5 Pro pricing in South Africa is R19500 😯
Using a promo code from one of the retailers here, we can get it for R13100 (using promo code TREAT30 from Very)

To put that into context, the SA price of console divided by what I could and did earn in SA is way higher than my current circumstances. Might be obvious but it's a major difference so don't know how the average enthusiastic gamer in SA can afford it

You're right, it can only do so much, but it's much better than what we had even as recently as the first half of last generation.

It used to be that a lower resolution meant unsightly jaggies, pixel crawl and shimmer. More recent techniques have done away with this, with images more closely approximating film (in that lower resolutions make an image softer, rather than hard edged, which is what we were trying to avoid back then through higher resolutions).

504p is quite simply unacceptable in a modern title on any modern display with even the best upscaling technique on the planet.

I think we both agree the Series S is not what developers are basing their choices around.

I think the mistake is to assume any metric as standard. A fixed platform is just that, it's up to the developer to decide how best to use the resources at hand. I'm satisfied with that dynamic as it takes those parameters off my plate. If you would prefer to make those choices yourself, PC is ideal.

Like Alan Wake 2. Those Remedy devs claiming the resolution doesn't improve the experience noticeably thought they could fool console owners.

I don't think it's about fooling console owners, it's just their point of view, where they feel resources are better spent.

Bro... that 504p is what it dips to on PS5. The fact that you mistook it for the Series S says it all.
The way you presented it, I thought you were talking about the resolution target, which is 720p in performance mode, not the lowest bounds.

That's just the nature of dynamic scaling, people want a performance mode, that's the trade-off. Fidelity mode is called such for a reason.

I'll also point out that the current line of discussion over the last page or two is the argument for a Pro console.

Pricing compared to the UK with code quoted aside...

This isn't so bad... I think I spent 6 grand on my 2TB NVMe SSD to upgrade my storage in the early days... so if it now comes with 2TB then it is worth it.

Is there still an available slot to add another 4TB NVMe ?

Sure but 825Gb + a 2Tb NVME is more than just the 2Tb of the Pro.

I paid R10k for my PS5 Digital that already came with a vertical stand, and R3k for a 1Tb NVME for a total of R13k. Now 55% more money gets you an extra 175gb, 45% faster GPU, PSSR hardware, Wifi7 and a shinier vertical stand.

It's not terrible value, but it isn't quite good either.

PS5 Pro Offers a Far More Accessible CMOS Battery

Compared to the regular PS5 where the CMOS battery can only be accessed via the motherboard, the PS5 Pro's dedicated slot makes it far easier to replace the battery if need be. This feature was last seen on the Nintendo Wii and Wii U consoles and bodes well for the PS5 Pro's preservation and repairability down the line. Interestingly, Sony didn't mention this CMOS battery slot alongside the PS5 Pro's numerous upgrades and features, likely because it's a deep-cut specification that would appeal only to a niche subset of prospective buyers.

Potential mainstream appeal aside, it's great to see Sony enlarging its focus on hardware repairability and preservation with the PS5 Pro. On the flip side, the lack of an included disc drive with the PS5 Pro sends the opposite message, even more so when attaching a separately-purchased disc drive to the console requires an internet connection. Hopefully, Sony is cognizant of this glaring issue with game preservation and has a better modular disc drive system in the works for future PlayStation consoles.

Some forums are arguing whether it's a spatial ML-based upscaler or just sharpening. I don't see a huge improvement but there's definitely something going on.

It looks like what the Sharpen+ plugin for Paint.net, I can see something :)

Not sure how much of this you'll notice while playing though. Would actually want to see how this looks (off/on) but in a high movement capture.
