Rate your recently watched series

Finished watching One Piece Season 1 (live action) and really enjoyed it. Bunch of no-name actors, over the top characters and a real sense of fun and adventure.

interesting fact of this character is that the actor in the series is not speaking, they got a voice actor to play the part.

1x physical actor in the show + 1x voice actor to do all his lines

It's a shame we no longer have a proper action star now days.

Sure, we have Jason Statham, Tom Cruise, The Rock, but it's just not the same ridiculousness as it used to be.

A product of its time, the era of Reagenomics and excess. I think we can still enjoy a lot of those flicks understanding the cultural environment of the time, but they can be pretty jarring to a modern audience.

Every Halloween I set aside a pile of horror and horror adjacent flicks for my wife to pick from - one of her picks last weekend was "They Live". That extended wrestling match in the back alley remains awesome.

I find a lot of modern films try too hard to stand out, and ultimately fail imo. They all need a twist, or force some PC undertone, need to push some message across, or use excessive "bad" CGI. The fun and taking risks in film making seems to have gone, it's now all about the "guaranteed" bottom line of the studios.

I have this urge to watch Delta Force for some reason [emoji28]

Probably nostalgia at play, I would say 80s and early 90s films were often very try hard and reach levels of bad rarely seen in today's mainstream.

I watch a lot of movies, including movies from that period, I honestly don't think much has changed. It's just that audiences today are generally only interested in / conditioned to seek out big budget spectacle stuff - a trend birthed by the films of those directors we most associate with the 80s.

It's exacerbated by streaming services and the need to appease the algorithm. There are still lots of great and interesting movies being made though, I can't say I long for any particular period in cinema history - and if you don't like what's being produced currently, there's over a century of great cinema to explore.

Criterion's Closet Picks is a great resource for suggestions - pick a director or actor you like and see what films inspired them.

I also have a soft spot for cheese - I revisited Swamp Thing (1982) and Captain America (1990) just this week. Now those are some terrible movies - both, to note, pushing the woke climate change agenda and featuring terrible special effects.

Foundation​

Season 1: Epic Sci-Fi series with action, religion, monarchy and weirdness. 7.5/10
Season 2: The first 3 episodes were boring but it picked up after that. Great story. 8/10
 
Bodies - 7 / 10 for me

Slow burn drama with time travel, can get a little boring at times but worth the watch if you have nothing else waiting.

The Fall of the House of Usher - 7/10

Feels like a supernatural version of Dopesick. I'd say this is one of the better Mike Flanagan series. Interesting to see what he does with the Dark Tower series at Amazon.
