PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro)
If Sony released an updated version of bloodborne that ran at 60fps they'd make more money than the Pro will get them especially with how many new players elden ring brought in, people want Bloodborne not an overpriced console that barely does anything better than the hardware it's trying to replace.

But the PS5 Pro is not meant to replace the PS5, it's a high-end model for people who want improved image quality and are prepared to pay a premium for it.

Sony is a hardware company, and in that space this is pretty common practice. Panasonic makes two Ultra HD players that are virtually identical, but one is twice the price of the other because it has certain qualities a select few value over the base model.

It's a high end model for people chasing clout, plain and simple, if you are in the console market for improved image quality you are already in the wrong market. PC gaming was there years before it, that's a dumb excuse because if it was true the person would be on a PC not a console for their improved image quality.

Just because it's common doesn't make it any less stupid, the cost vs what you get is absolutely crazy here, how anyone can say differently is beyond me but there will always be those few that defend it like anything else in this world.

At $699 this should be a PS6, double the price for barely any difference is obscene and I can't wrap my head around people defending this. If you want one fine but don't act like it's this amazing upgrade cause it's not.

Maybe that makes sense in your circumstances, but I'm not interested in owning a PC and I would appreciate a PS5 with better image quality.

What's costly to some isn't to others, it's all relative.

What's barely different to you, and how would you know it is barely different without proper comparison? I sit just over 2m away from an 83" display, I'm fairly confident the improvement will be appreciable.

I don't think it's an amazing upgrade, I hope the PS6 is an amazing upgrade, but this is just a nice bump in clarity and visual features for those that would like one.

I don't know why people get upset about it, other than maybe they would actually like one but are upset by the pricing.

Thanks

Everyone is feeling a little stung by the price. Just trying to figure out how much "cheaper" PS5 Pro would be when compare to a similar performing PC (excl monitor).

Is £700/$700 still value for money when compared to a similar PC?

To get an RT equivalent on PC you need RTX40. AMD's 3D cache CPUs offer a nice FPS boost when making use of scaling from lower internal resolutions.

Did sums on Wootware, R26k for a PC that's a good bit faster with similar/sometimes more tech than a PS5 Pro. 5700X3D+ 4070 Super + 2Tb PCIE 4.0 NVME system with wireless KBM.

*Forgot the CPU cooler on the pic, add another R600 for a quiet one which is how I got to R26k.

Nothing wrong with wanting it for the potentially better image quality but when something sucks it sucks, and I'm the biggest Sony fanboy, the price is almost irrelevant imo, if it could do something that the Base couldn't thrn perhaps but it's going to have to have the same cpu constraints so I don't see gta 6 running at 30 on Base and 60 on pro. I think in reality it'll end up being even less utilised than the ps4 pro.

Tell me how much you enjoyed playing RDR2 at 60fps on the PS4 Pro?

Nobody played RDR2 at 60fps on the ps4 pro lol. I think you're mixing up with the rdr remaster.

And that gets to the whole point of what I'm saying if they had announced something exciting or worthwhile like gta 6 being 60fps only on the pro then yes we have to go and buy it. But that's not really possible.

I don't know why people get upset about it, other than maybe they would actually like one but are upset by the pricing.
That's precisely why people are upset about it. Based on comments I've been seeing, there are many who bought into the idea of true next-gen gaming when PS5 and Series X was announced 4 years ago. Now the PS5 Pro finally offers what was marketed back then, but now at double the price the initial console offered.

I mean, that's my point. Rockstar didn't even give us 60fps even when the PS4 Pro CPU could handle it.

Even Digital Foundry was surprised, they were expecting $599.

If this hit at $599.99/€650 digital with a 20 minute segment at the end of a 50 minute State of Play, I think it would've seen far less internet uproar.

Instead we got a 9 minute segment that didn't really show the improvements well enough and ended with a bombshell price drop with a big dollar/euro disparity.

Maybe that makes sense in your circumstances, but I'm not interested in owning a PC and I would appreciate a PS5 with better image quality.

Then you aren't interested in actual better image quality, which further proves my point that it's a dumb excuse, you are interested in the idea of it but not actually getting the device which would give you it.

True there are a lot of idiots out there with money they don't know how to manage.

What's barely different to you, and how would you know it is barely different without proper comparison? I sit just over 2m away from an 83" display, I'm fairly confident the improvement will be appreciable.

Did we not watch the same stream? Sony saw it fit to show side by side comparisons to the world to demonstrate their new upgraded console which barely made any difference at all. Let's not even get into their poor decision of games to show off of their upgraded tech with.

I sit 45cm from my monitor, not sure what this has to do with anything, do I need to get a 83" display and sit 2m from it to make a fair comparison? Is 45cm from a monitor not good enough or is this one of those what color is your Bugatti scenarios?

I don't know why people get upset about it, other than maybe they would actually like one but are upset by the pricing.

People are upset because they wanted a decent upgrade and instead got the bare minimum at double the cost. The pricing would be far less of an issue if this thing was a beast out of the box, but it's not and that's what people are most upset about. The majority of gamers do not want one, that's the biggest upset and it's sad Sony is making another dumb decision here, they are out of touch.

I don't think it could on rdr2, rockstar games are notoriously cpu intensive, Same way the ps5 pro cpu is the same as the Base ps5,

but regardless they should have had something to show for it besides years old games with supposedly better image quality, not sure where I saw rumors of an updated and improved dualsense.

Anyway I just hope ps6 is not a cheap 399 or 499 machine,

If a dude with a jailbroken one on an unofficial patch could get to 1080p/53fps on the PS4 Pro then I don't see why Rockstar couldn't hit 60 with some optimization, but maybe in the city it is different.

Yea, it wasn't great. Could be a calculated 9min "rip the band-aid off" moment, with the next State of Play and subsequent marketing set to try do the convincing.

This is like Nintendo releasing the OLED switch at $599 instead of $50 difference it was over the original model.

Actually the OLED screen was a bigger improvement than what PS5 Pro has shown :p

I'm interested in a Playstation with better image quality, I'm not interested in a PC.

There's a laundry list of reasons for that, if you really want to get in to it we can, but otherwise I don't want to bog down the thread with it.

True there are a lot of idiots out there with money they don't know how to manage.

What's it got to do with being an idiot or not knowing how to manage money? We don't all have the same personal economies and priorities.

Did we not watch the same stream? Sony saw it fit to show side by side comparisons to the world to demonstrate their new upgraded console which barely made any difference at all. Let's not even get into their poor decision of games to show off of their upgraded tech with.

The quality of the stream was not up to showing off the differences, it wasn't a DF style comparison. The point was to get the general concept across. They did a poor job of it, that does not mean the differences are not there.

I sit 45cm from my monitor, not sure what this has to do with anything, do I need to get a 83" display and sit 2m from it to make a fair comparison? Is 45cm from a monitor not good enough or is this one of those what color is your Bugatti scenarios?

Size, resolution, quality and distance of the display dictate the perceivable details. Image quality on the PS5 has not been great of late, this promises to remedy that, which makes it a worthwhile proposition for me (assuming the promise is met).

It was never intended for the majority of gamers, and because it's a low volume device that will not be subsidised, they have to balance the hardware against the price point.

It may technically be a 399 machine, but Sony definitely won't be selling the PS6 at that price point for sure :p

Rockstar probably could, but there seems to be no financial incentive to do so right now.
I recall there was a modder who discovered the poor compression Rockstar was using for GTA Online and gave a technical presentation of how much faster his modded version booted up, only for Rockstar to pay the dude $10k and make some half-hearted excuse about how they missed that.

Nope not needed, as you just specified you are interest in a PlayStation with better image quality and not actual better image quality.

What's it got to do with being an idiot or not knowing how to manage money? We don't all have the same personal economies and priorities.

It's usually that pool that fall for the over priced shiny new object that doesn't do much more than the previous version. You find them in any economy.

They did a poor job of it, that does not mean the differences are not there.

Yes they did, no one is saying there aren't any differences but the minute differences there are isn't worth their asking price.

Image quality on the PS5 has not been great of late, this promises to remedy that, which makes it a worthwhile proposition for me (assuming the promise is met).

Was that not the promise with the PS5? What has changed? Either the PS5 did deliver on the promise which then begs the question why is the Pro even needed if the PS5 image quality was fine up till this point and if it wasn't what makes you think they will keep their promises on the Pro when they didn't with the PS5?

It was never intended for the majority of gamers, and because it's a low volume device that will not be subsidised, they have to balance the hardware against the price point.

Right so basically all you are saying is it's a low effort cash grab machine designed to pray on the pool of gamers (as discussed above) out there who will buy one?

You should give it a go in a few months. 9800X3D and RTX5090 PC build.

Star Wars Outlaws
- PS5 720p/60 + no RTDI
- RTX4090 1440p/90 + RTDI + much higher settings + DLSS 3.5 FG

Alan Wake 2
- PS5 850p/60 + no Raytracing at all
- 4090 1440p/70 + Pathtracing + much higher settings + DLSS 3.5 FG

With a 40% faster 5090 and DLSS improvements you'd basically have PS6-level performance with DLSS surpassing anything PSSR could do.
