Will you be getting a PS5 Pro?

Well, they did point out in the Jedi Survivor review that even on a 4090 with an i7-13700K it "stutters like crazy" and is a "total mess" compared to the console version - so you know, there's that #stutterstruggle

Well then play that one title on PS5 Pro and play the other 99.99% of multiplats on PC. Pretty amazing hey?

From my understanding shader compilation stutter is a general problem on PC.

But that isn't the issue for me really, PC is just not appealing to me. I've always been a console gamer, besides a brief stint on PC to play Half-Life and a few other titles, which drove me insane (I bought three GPUs in the space of a year and spent far more time tweaking, running benchmarks and messing with graphics options than actually gaming).

Convenience and simplicity are a big deal to me, maybe that makes little sense to you, but it's what works for me and I'm happy this way. Just as I'm unlikely to convince you that you should spend as much on sound as you do on your rig, we don't all value the same things.

If one day the console model no longer works and Sony pivots to PC, well then I suppose I won't have much of a choice, but then my library comes with me and I'll make do.

GT7's update has arrived, only applies tomorrow morning though! I was really confused at first, then I notice the pending install date. First time I've ever seen this.

Interesting feature of the GT7 update is it allows you to toggle PSSR on and off - quite interesting to see the difference.

Image quality is already high in this title, the difference between on and off is not big, but PSSR does a better job of suppressing aliasing. I suspect they provide the toggle because some people might prefer the "sharper" aliased look of the more visible stair-stepping along vehicle panels and such.

Hopefully this is the standard going forward. With some of the issues PSSR is having in other titles, PS5 Pro gamers should be able to default to the original upscaling in the event of unforeseen shimmering and artifacts.

Managed to pick up the add on drive yesterday. Stock has been an issue around these parts with Sony seemingly not making nearly enough (although the US had no real issues) and scalpers deciding this was the item.

Anyway at least it’s done, super easy to install, quite noisy when in use. Luckily that’s just for the installation. Now I can pick up those cheap physical titles again.

Great tech on paper, and then you get to the real world where PSSR struggles at low input resolution, has issues with foliage, costs 10% performance versus FSR, 3rd parties resort to implementing PSSR toggles as they don't know how to fix the issues and good first parties like Guerilla stick to their own superior upscaling techniques instead.

Good on Sony for getting the beta testing out the way first, should be good to go with the next gen NPU in the PS6.

$700 to beta test a console...ouch!

PSSR is only one part of the equation and will improve in time. If it's not a good fit, go with another method, devs are free to use the system as they like. Implementations will only improve as time goes by, and I believe most, if not all the early poor PSSR implementations have been addressed in some form or another.

Also, pleasure to be of service!

Yes, either by them stealthily replacing PSSR in a patch or adding a toggle. Not quite fixing the problem.
Sounds like fixing it to me. If the current implementation doesn't work for your game, don't use it.

Look at the excellent image quality on Horizon, no PSSR but whatever their approach it's not (and presumably can't be) implemented on base PS5 either.

Also look at what was achieved on F1, and these are games retroactively updated, very keen to see how games like Indiana Jones and Intergalactic turn out on the Pro.

the improvements – are they worth the Upgrade?
Having the 2TB storage is nice. Spiderman 2 looks gorgeous on it, along with a few other games BUT I would have enjoyed them just as much on the normal base PS5. In hindsight, I wouldn't have bought the Pro but I got it at a good deal so not complaining.

What do you guys think about it – the improvements – are they worth the Upgrade?

Yes and No. Depends on many factors.

Considering the trade in deal I got it wasn’t really all that much money to spend and the outright price seems way lower than SA.

Some games get a big boost, some seem to be worse off until properly patched. So depends on what games you play. Over time it’ll get better and better and hopefully the price will come down too, but they would probably be better off trying to get the base PS5 price down and make their margin on the Pro for a good while.
