PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro)
I think all the image experts will end up disappointed when in the end it doesn't eliminate the choice of fidelity or performance modes or offers the best of both for the games that get updates or future releases that may only see minimal or no differences between Base and pro.

Summary of PS5 Pro video on Digital Foundry's Patreon from the 65Gb ProRes file of the presentation that they received from Sony (video should be out tomorrow for non-patrons). There will be deeper dives later.

The Last of Us Part 2 - Still 60fps. Still 1440p.
Improvements : PSSR.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - Still 60FPS. Still Performance mode settings.
Improvements : PSSR. Higher res 1440-1800p (like 40fps Mode but at 60).

Alan Wake 2 - Still 864p/60fps and 1260p/30fps
Improvements : PSSR. 60fps mode has higher settings. 30fps mode has some raytraced reflections but still some SSR.

Horizon Forbidden West - Still 60fps with checkerboarding and not PSSR.
Improvements : Increased resolution but still not full 4K. Higher settings.

Gram Turismo 7 :
Improvements : PSSR. 8K mode. Added raytracing mode (quarter res reflections, still better than Forza on Series X) which drops the game to 1188p instead of 2160p no-raytracing.

Dragon's Dogma 2 : Stable 60fps and could be using PSSR.
Harry Potter Hogwarts Legacy : Better RT Reflections but still some SSR, and added RT Shadows.
Assassins Creed Shadows : 864p at 60fps

In general PSSR slots in below DLSS and above FSR, not bad for first implementation.

Seems first party shows gains. Third party, not so much. The raytracing in itself is very CPU-time intensive, and I think this is why the RDNA4 RT boost is a bit underwhelming.

DF said a few times the CPU is likely to be the limiting factor of the PS5 Pro.

I agree with @Evil_Villain. Forget about quality and RT and just boost the FPS and implement stable 60FPS on games. Once 60FPS is stable, then add some bling.

Remedy's games and resolution discussion pops up every once in a while. Image quality matters more than resolution, not that I'm confirming anything.

We'll drop some details on the PS5 Pro version of Alan Wake 2 in the coming weeks with some assets too. I think the version will be a pleasant surprise, but hard to tell these days.

I don't expect or want it to eliminate the choice of fidelity or performance. Better image clarity at 60 or more advanced ray-tracing at 30 and everything in between - it's up to developers to decide how to implement the features of the Pro.

We'll see what it means for games in practical terms in the run up to release.

Agree that we'll still get options, disagree that anyone will be disappointed by that.

Will just mean that Performance vs Quality vs Balanced will all be better in some way and probably most will start choosing balanced over pure performance.

Seems first party shows gains. Third party, not so much.
As always, needs devs to put in some effort for the benefit. I guess new games will just start using the stuff by default like PSSR over FSR but current games need some kind of patch and effort, so will and some won't.

Yup, that is well known. Imagine how much this would have cost with a new CPU as well

Once 60FPS is stable, then add some bling.
Yes and no. I'll take 40fps with VRR, I always choose that mode when a game offers it.

Koodoo must hurry up with the SA pricing. I need to know so I can plan accordingly.

My FOMO is getting high, on the one hand it makes sense to wait until more stuff is out making full use of the tech to justify the massive price but on the other hand the price may go up even higher and while you wait the PS6 gets even closer.

Annoyingly, I can’t watch the video myself, on a plane and the internet is terrible.

I’ve seen screenshots of the PS5 30fps mode vs 60 on the Pro, but any mention of Pro at 30?

No.

The difference on this one is huge. The footage they got was of the Pro in some singular mode, it runs better than base in performance mode and it's visually better that the base in quality mode. So in terms of what Cerny said about not needing to compromise with a Pro mode, this one delivers.

Considering this hasn't even launched yet and there's still optimisation improvements to be had with the PSSR implementation it's very impressive, much more so than everything else they have shown. With this one video i've seen people in other forums completely backtrack lol. If they do another couple of these with other games this thing is going to sell out.

People can be outraged all they like, this thing is a luxury. Keep the PS5 or buy a slim it will play everything perfectly. There is no reason to get a Pro other than wanting the best possible way to play on a console. As with all tech, that final 5%-10% improvement comes with a much bigger price bump.
I think it's more so the shock value that's sparked certain outrage.
Now maybe I missed some of the Pro's earlier marketing campaigns, what with it being a poorly-kept secret and all, but I believe many people didn't initially see this as a luxury model but rather an iterative upgrade. All we've had to go on here is the previous launch of the PS4 Pro, which launched within an acceptable price margin.

So when the expectation started doing the rounds that an inevitable PS5 Pro would be launched, not many people had it in their heads that this is now the Lexus to the PS5's Corolla. At most they expected it would be an R-Type Toyota upgrade. Now we find out that the Pro brand is instead a marquee brand, kinda like the AMG wing of Mercedes. Not many people were aware that the Pro is a luxury item to be purchased only by the sons of Arab billionaires and by Jeff Bezos.

I think in time the shock will subside, but I believe this is the cause of most of the vitriol flying about online and the PS5 Pro will be forgotten once rumours of the PS6 start swirling.

The difference is exaggerated with such a poor upscaling implementation in the original. FSR 3.1 would completely change the base game without requiring a hardware upgrade.

It's starting to share many similarities with the PC segment :
- DLSS is carrying games by devs who think poor image reconstruction is fine, now we have PSSR in the console segment doing nearly the same.
- DLSS Frame Generation is carrying games by devs who push out heavily CPU bottlenecked games, I wouldn't be surprised to see some hardware accelerated frame gen in the PS6.
- Some PC users upgrade their GPUs to turn on DLSS and Ultra settings and some PS5 users upgrade to a Pro to turn on PSSR and Ultra settings.

We're just paying an early adopters tax to use PSSR and higher settings. Just like in the iPhone market where the Pro has all the nice features and the regular one gets them at least a year later.

Well, this is a console for people who take private jets to their local supermarket, so I don't think they mind paying this tax 🤷‍♂️

Not sure it would have. If FSR was any good I don’t think Sony would have bothered with PSSR.

But now that they did they get to reuse that tech going forward for a long time. The R&D cost has been covered by the Pro, PS6 will just have it.

Well yeah that’s every piece of tech out there right? Cars do it, TVs do it, name a thing and it’s like that. At least with consoles we are at 2 and not 10 models with new ones coming every year.

PCs much worse with individual components coming out each year.

I take the Bentley, the runway at my local Coles is too short.

FSR 2.2 would undoubtedly be better than the blurry mess FF7 Rebirth shipped with.

Not saying PSSR isn't worth investing in, it's excellent. But it doesn't mean we should let devs get away with piss poor implementations of upscaling on PS5.
Just look at FF XVI, the FSR 3.0 experience on PC is very different to PS5. And no, you don't need a monster GPU to run it.

But this is convincing me even more to get the Pro sooner. It's clear that these lazy devs jump for that Sony money to implement PSSR and the base consoles must deal with the blurry leftovers.
